What is a TFSA?

  • The tax free savings account (TFSA) is a registered savings plan created in 2009 to encourage individuals to grow their savings tax free.

  • Contributions to this plan are not tax deductible and do not qualify for tax reductions like.

  • RRSPs. On the other hand, funds accumulated in or withdrawn from TFSAs are not taxable.

This savings plan is available to all Canadian residents aged 18 years or over who:
  • Want to grow their savings tax-free;

  • Want to save for major projects;

  • Have used all their RRSP contribution room and still have cash to invest;

  • Have unused cash from RRIF withdrawals.
