Social responsibility: the cornerstone of Desjardins’ values

Social responsibility and sustainable development are at the heart of Desjardins’ fundamental values and priorities. Desjardins became a pioneer of socially responsible investing when it launched the Desjardins Environment Fund in 1990, the first responsible fund in Québec.

Today, Desjardins offers its members a wide range of responsible investment products in the form of turnkey investment solutions and individual funds.

What is socially responsible investing ?

Socially responsible investing (SRI) takes into account investors' values and allows them to focus on socially responsible businesses with the values prized by Desjardins.

Socially responsible investing (SRI) involves screening companies using a double due diligence process. As in conventional investing, a company is first subjected to a thorough financial analysis. Only then is it evaluated based on its social, environmental, and governance practices.

At Desjardins Funds, SRI is also an active form of investing that takes steps to influence companies’ practices and reduce their negative impact on the environment and communities. The Shareholer Action Program steps involve dialogue with companies, shareholder resolutions, and proxy voting activities.

Desjardins’ SRI selection
Desjardins offers a full range of socially responsible investment solutions including:

SocieTerra Portfolios: The first and only socially responsible turnkey investment solution geared to your investor profile

The Desjardins Environment Fund

And a selection of individual funds managed by our partner, Northwest & Ethical Investments L.P.

These funds invest in all sectors of the economy except the arms, tobacco, and nuclear energy industries. They do invest in sectors known to pose a risk to the environment—natural resources, for example—considering it important to encourage these companies to improve their practices.

SocieTerra Portfolios, Ethical Funds, and the Desjardins Environment Fund are different in that they work to convince companies to adopt responsible practices. These efforts comprise the Shareholder Action Program, designed and run by Ethical Funds.*
